Buying used computers can be a challenge if you're not sure what to look for. There are so many different brands, models and features in personal computers today that finding a new one is difficult let alone finding a used one that's going to last for a while. But if you look at some basic features and compare them, you'll be able to find used desktop computers that are well worth the money you spend on them.
Where to Buy Used Computers
You can buy used computers almost anywhere today, from computer repair shops to online stores. You should be aware of the difference between used and refurbished computers. Refurbished computers have been inspected and repaired if necessary. Unlike use models, these have been brought back to as close as factory-new as possible. Refurbished computers often come with some type of warranty. Used computers can be in any condition and are often sold as is.
When looking at used computers, avoid very inexpensive brands. A computer that only cost $300 new is not going to be worth paying much for when it's used. But something like HP used desktop computers that cost several hundred dollars or over $1000 new are worth purchasing when they're used because you know they started out as a quality piece of equipment. As long as they don't appear abused and everything seems to be in working order, those could be a good purchase.
Compare Used Computers
Just as you would do when buying a used car or any expensive used item, ask the seller why he or she is selling the computer. Very often they will say they're upgrading to a newer model or larger computer. You might discover that the person actually purchases used computers and resells them. In this case, you're probably less able to determine the actual quality of the item because they handle them in bulk.
EBay is a good place to purchase used computers. You can also look for used computer sales at places like colleges and businesses that are looking to upgrade their entire inventory of computers. These computers are usually fairly heavily used but are better maintained than home computers.
